    What are Science and Technology

    Science and technology are two fundamental tools for transforming and developing any society. To distinguish between them, it is essential to understand the definitions of both disciplines, their objectives, and their respective fields of application, given that we tend to confuse them.

    The purpose of technology is not to understand the world, but rather to modify it in order to satisfy human needs. In other words, the goal is not knowledge, but application; for this reason, we consider that technology is always used *for* something specific—ranging from the production of objects to the curing of diseases, as well as for commercial or financial utility, or for communication, among many other fields of application.

    How Science and Technology are Related

    Therefore, the great transformation between science and technology constitutes their objective. While science helps us to know, describe, and expand our understanding of the world, technology aspires to modify and adapt the world to our needs. Nevertheless, the relationship between these two disciplines is close and intimate—so much so that we tend to confuse them.

    But what exactly is the relationship between science and technology? It is simple: each relies on the advancements of the other to achieve its goals. Technology utilizes the knowledge generated by science to refine engineering; science, for its part, employs advanced technologies to conduct research that is more precise, concrete, and effective.

    Furthermore, scientific research is often directed toward a specific field or area, with the aim of resolving questions inherent to engineering—as is the case, for example, in cellular biology. Conversely, new technologies may emerge as a result of scientific breakthroughs—sometimes even unexpectedly—as exemplified by genetic engineering.

    For all these reasons, the relationship between science and technology is such that—as we have already noted—they are often conflated to the point where expressions such as “applied science” are used; this is, in essence, nothing more than an activity that combines both disciplines and occupies a middle ground between the two.
